AARP membership costs just $16 a year, or $12 with auto-renewal enabled, and much of its appeal rests on travel-related savings that can offset that fee many times over in a single trip. According to AARP's own membership benefits page, members get access to reduced rates on car rentals, cruises, flights, and hotels, primarily funneled through the AARP Travel Center, which runs on Expedia's booking platform.

How the AARP Travel Center Works

The AARP Travel Center, officially branded as \"Powered by Expedia,\" functions much like a standard travel booking site, letting members search hotels, flights, car rentals, and cruises by destination and date. According to the platform's own site, members can filter search results specifically for \"AARP Member-Exclusive\" listings, which often carry an additional reduction on top of standard rates. Flights, hotels, and rental cars can also be bundled together into a single combined booking, and doing so sometimes comes with an added gift card as an incentive.

Hotel Savings

Members typically see reductions ranging from 10 to 25 percent at participating hotel brands, with 10 percent being the most common reduction across the majority of properties, according to The Senior List's breakdown. Chains like Best Western, Wyndham, Radisson, and Hilton are commonly included, and some hotels add extras like late checkout for members who book with their AARP number.

Car Rentals

Car rental savings tend to be among the stronger benefits, with reductions of up to 30 percent at companies like Avis, Budget, and Payless. Members frequently receive a complimentary additional driver at no added charge, along with select vehicle upgrades and reduced GPS rental rates, according to Upgraded Points.

Flights and Cruises

Flight savings run anywhere from $50 to $200 off, most commonly accessed through partnerships like British Airways or directly through the AARP Travel Center. Cruise-related member benefits vary by line and often come in the form of onboard credit rather than a straightforward reduction on the base fare, with cruise partners occasionally rotating seasonally.

What Members Should Watch For

It's worth being clear-eyed about a few things. First, AARP membership is open to anyone, not exclusively people 50 and older, so eligibility isn't restricted by age despite AARP's traditional association with older adults. Second, some benefits marketed as exclusive, like AARP-branded Medigap insurance through UnitedHealthcare, are simply one option among many providers, and comparing rates elsewhere before committing is generally worthwhile, according to Wealthvieu's benefits guide. The same logic applies to travel bookings: checking a hotel or rental car's standalone rate against the AARP-listed rate before booking ensures the reduction is genuinely competitive.

FAQs

Do I need to be 50 or older to join AARP?
No, membership is open to anyone regardless of age, despite AARP's association with older adults.

Is the AARP Travel Center a separate company from Expedia?
No, it operates on Expedia's platform under an AARP-branded partnership, which is why bookings and search functionality closely resemble Expedia's own site.

Are cruise benefits the same across every cruise line?
No, cruise-related member perks vary significantly by line and often come as onboard credit rather than a fare reduction, and they can change seasonally.

Is it worth comparing prices outside the AARP Travel Center before booking?
Yes, checking a hotel, flight, or rental car's standard rate separately helps confirm the AARP-listed rate is actually lower before finalizing a booking.

Conclusion

AARP membership brings genuine, verifiable travel savings, particularly on car rentals and hotel stays, often covering the annual membership fee after just one or two trips. That said, treating every AARP-labeled rate as automatically the best available option isn't wise — a quick comparison against standard booking sites remains the most reliable way to confirm real value before locking in a reservation.
