All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline and a Star Alliance member, operates a comprehensive domestic and international network supported by specialized travel programs for senior passengers. ANA integrates age-based fare structures, accessible airport assistance protocols, medical support frameworks, and custom in-flight care to assist elderly travelers, passengers with limited mobility, and seniors traveling independently.

1. Senior Fare Architecture & Tier Overview

ANA provides dedicated ticketing categories and age-qualifying fare structures across its domestic route network to facilitate flexible, cost-effective air travel for older adults.

Fare Category / Service Tier	Age & Membership Eligibility	Operational Rules & Ticketing Conditions
Senior Special Fare (Domestic)	Passengers aged 65 or older registered with ANA Mileage Club (AMC).	Same-day discounted booking system available from midnight on the day of departure for unreserved seats across Japan domestic routes.
Caregiver's Fare	Designated caregivers accompanying passengers requiring assistance.	Subsidized domestic ticketing tier allowing registered caregivers to travel alongside senior passengers requiring medical or physical support.
ANA Airport Support	Solo travelers aged 65 and older on ANA-operated flights.	Non-monetary operational service providing dedicated ground staff escorts from check-in to the departure gate or lounge.
International Senior Special Services	Senior passengers on international long-haul itineraries.	Pre-arranged assistance covering multi-terminal transit, customs navigation, and international connection transfers.

2. Airport Ground Support & In-Flight Accessibility Frameworks

ANA operates standardized accessibility protocols across terminal hubs—including Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Tokyo Narita (NRT)—to minimize walking distances, streamline security checks, and support elderly passengers.

ANA Airport Support & Terminal Mobility

Dedicated Escort Services: Senior passengers aged 65 and older traveling alone can request ground support staff to guide them from the check-in counter through security control to the departure gate or lounge.
Wheelchair Logistics: Airport-compatible wheelchairs (including non-magnetic and narrow aisle-compatible models) are available at all airport counters. Personal mobility devices are checked at the counter or gate and delivered at the destination aircraft door upon request.
Electric Cart Transit: At major hub locations such as Tokyo Haneda Terminal 2, electric passenger carts operate to transport seniors with mobility limitations through long departure concourses.
Pre-Boarding Service: Eligible senior travelers requiring additional time are offered priority pre-boarding to settle into their cabin seats prior to general passenger boarding.

In-Flight Care & Medical Accommodation Protocols

Cabin Wheelchair Access: Aircraft are equipped with specialized in-flight wheelchairs designed to fit narrow aisles, allowing cabin crew to assist seniors with movement to and from the lavatories.
Baggage Handling Assistance: Flight attendants assist senior travelers with stowing and retrieving carry-on luggage from overhead storage bins.
Dietary & Medical Requirements: Low-sodium, diabetic, soft-digestive, and low-fat special meals can be pre-ordered up to 24 hours prior to international departures. Passengers carrying prescription medications, portable oxygen concentrators (POCs), or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices can pre-register their equipment via the ANA Disability Desk.

3. Reservation Guidelines, Disability Desk Coordination & Notice Requirements

ANA enforces strict advance notice timelines and medical documentation protocols to coordinate ground handling, mobility equipment, and international connection logistics.

Advance Notice Timelines

ANA Airport Support: Must be booked by phone at least 24 hours prior to departure for Japan domestic flights, or 72 hours prior to departure for international flights.
Wheelchair & Mobility Device Registration: Passengers traveling with personal battery-powered wheelchairs must submit battery specifications (lithium-ion watt-hour ratings or non-spillable battery types) at least 48 hours in advance to comply with international dangerous goods safety rules.
Medical Information Form (MEDIF): Required if a senior traveler has an acute medical condition, recent surgery, or requires continuous in-flight oxygen support. The MEDIF must be completed by a qualified physician and submitted to the ANA Disability Desk prior to ticketing.

Connecting Flights & Arrival Escorts

Transit Support: For connecting flights, staff meet senior passengers at the arrival gate and escort them through terminal transfers, transit security, or shuttle bus connections.
Destination Arrival: Upon reaching the final destination, ground personnel meet senior travelers at the aircraft door, assist through customs and immigration, and escort them to the baggage claim or vehicle pickup point.

4. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does a senior passenger qualify for the ANA Senior Special domestic fare?

To utilize the Senior Special fare on domestic flights within Japan, passengers must be at least 65 years old and registered as members of the ANA Mileage Club. Reservations under this fare category open at midnight on the day of departure and are subject to seat availability on the selected flight.

What ground assistance is provided for elderly passengers traveling alone?

Through the ANA Airport Support service, solo travelers aged 65 and older can receive a staff escort from the check-in counter through security to the boarding gate (or lounge, if eligible). Upon arrival or transfer, staff assist the passenger from the gate to the baggage claim area or connecting flight.

Can personal wheelchairs be used up to the aircraft door?

Yes. Passengers may use their personal wheelchairs through the airport up to the departure gate, where the device will be checked into the cargo hold. ANA provides airport-owned wheelchairs for boarding, and the passenger’s personal device is returned at the arrival aircraft door or baggage claim area depending on local airport facilities.

Are special meals available for seniors on long-haul international ANA flights?

Yes. ANA offers dietary and medically tailored meal options—including low-sodium, low-fat, diabetic, and bland/digestive meals—on international routes. Special meal requests must be submitted through the ANA website or customer service center at least 24 hours before flight departure.

Conclusion

All Nippon Airways maintains a structured operational ecosystem designed to make air travel safe, accessible, and comfortable for senior citizens. By offering specialized domestic fare categories, dedicated ground support, priority boarding, and comprehensive mobility management via the ANA Disability Desk, the airline provides seamless door-to-door transit for elderly travelers across its global network.
