Power outages have a way of exposing exactly how much a household depends on steady electricity, and home standby generators have become a common answer for homeowners who want to avoid that vulnerability altogether. Briggs & Stratton, a name long associated with engines, has built out a full lineup of home standby units under its PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ lines. Here's what's actually worth understanding before choosing one.

How Standby Generators Actually Work

Unlike a portable generator that needs to be wheeled out and fueled manually during an outage, a standby unit is permanently installed outside the home, according to Briggs & Stratton's own buying guide. It's hard-wired into the home's electrical system and connected to a natural gas line or liquid propane source, constantly monitoring utility power in the background. When an outage happens, the transfer switch kicks the generator on automatically, without requiring anyone to be home to start it.

Choosing the Right Size

Briggs & Stratton's lineup spans from a compact 13kW unit up through 26kW models, according to the company's residential generator page. The 13kW PowerProtect is built for a smaller footprint, suiting properties with limited outdoor space while still covering essential circuits during an outage. At the larger end, the 26kW models are engineered to run an entire house simultaneously, including heavier loads like central air conditioning, without needing to cut back on anything else running in the home.

One detail worth understanding is motor starting capability, separate from a generator's steady running output. Large appliances like air conditioners require a brief, significant surge of power just to switch on, and Briggs & Stratton's PowerProtect+ line is specifically engineered to handle that kind of demand, according to the company, allowing a 5-ton air conditioner to start without needing to size up to a larger, more expensive unit purely for that purpose.

Installation and What to Expect

Because these are permanent installations, they require a visit from a certified local dealer before anything is finalized. According to Briggs & Stratton's dealer information page, a dealer will check the electrical meter, gas lines, and circuit breaker panel location to determine the best placement, confirm the home's wiring specifications, and help decide between natural gas and liquid propane as a fuel source. From there, a homeowner receives a full estimate covering the generator unit, the required transfer switch and modules, installation and permit charges, and any additional accessories.

Several models are also approved for installation as close as 18 inches to a building, which helps homeowners with tighter lot lines fit a unit without major landscaping changes.

Warranty and Maintenance Features

Briggs & Stratton generators run a short, roughly 16-second weekly self-test to confirm they're in working order while keeping noise and fuel use to a minimum. Select PowerProtect+ models also include EnergyTrak remote monitoring, letting homeowners check a generator's status from a phone at any time, alongside what the company describes as the most comprehensive warranty terms in the category.

FAQs

Do I need to be home for the generator to turn on during an outage?
No, the automatic transfer switch detects a power loss and starts the generator without anyone needing to be present.

What's the difference between running output and motor starting power?
Running output is what a generator sustains continuously, while motor starting power refers to the brief surge needed to start large appliances like an air conditioner, a category Briggs & Stratton designs its PowerProtect+ line around specifically.

Can I install a standby generator myself?
No, installation requires a certified local dealer to assess electrical and gas requirements and handle any necessary permits.

Which fuel source is better, natural gas or propane?
It depends on what's already available at the property; a dealer visit typically determines which option makes more sense for a specific home.

Conclusion

Choosing the right Briggs & Stratton home standby generator comes down to matching the unit's size and starting power to a home's actual electrical demands, particularly if central air conditioning is part of the picture. Since installation requires a dealer assessment of gas lines, wiring, and placement, scheduling that visit early is the most reliable way to get an accurate estimate and a system that fits the property correctly.
