A bright, modern clothing store stretches into the distance, its racks lined with shirts in coral, navy, mustard, and stripes. Folded stacks sit on wooden tables, plants brighten the shelves, and track lights glow overhead. The scene is a reminder of where wholesale begins: every garment on those racks started with a supplier somewhere. This guide explains how to find, evaluate, and work with wholesale suppliers in China, from the first search to a repeat order, with a particular eye on products like apparel and accessories.

Why Buyers Look to China

China is home to a vast network of factories, trading companies, and wholesale markets covering nearly every product category, from clothing and textiles to electronics, home goods, toys, and packaging. For retailers and online sellers, this concentration offers wide variety, specialized production clusters, and the ability to customize products. It also demands careful research, because quality, reliability, and honesty vary enormously from one supplier to the next.

The core principle is simple: finding suppliers is easy, but finding reliable ones takes process.

Manufacturer or Trading Company?

Before searching, understand the two main supplier types:

Manufacturers own or operate factories and produce goods themselves. They usually allow more control over materials, design, and production details, but may require larger minimum orders.
Trading companies buy from factories and resell, often combining products from several makers. They can offer lower minimum quantities and more variety, but add a layer between you and production.

A trade guide from Cogoport on verifying China suppliers notes that words such as production and assembly in a company's description point to a manufacturer, while wholesale and distribution point to a trading company. Neither type is automatically better. The right choice depends on your order size, customization needs, and how much control you want.

Where to Find Suppliers

According to a sourcing guide from MWT Sourcing, the main channels are:

Alibaba. The largest marketplace, suited to most product categories and first searches. The guide cautions that manufacturers and trading companies can look almost identical on the platform.
The Canton Fair. Described as the world's largest trade fair, held twice a year in Guangzhou and ideal for building direct relationships.
Yiwu Market. A massive wholesale market with more than 40,000 shops, best for small orders, consumer goods, and variety buying.
Sourcing agents. Local experts who find, vet, and manage suppliers on your behalf, especially useful for complex or higher-risk orders.

Other platforms include Made-in-China.com, Global Sources, and 1688.com, the domestic wholesale site run by Alibaba Group, which is primarily aimed at buyers inside China.

Marketplaces

Marketplaces let you browse thousands of listings quickly. WorldFirst's guide to finding suppliers in China recommends ordering samples, since many wholesale suppliers allow buyers to test before committing, and looking for verified tags that indicate a supplier has been vetted by the platform. Be specific in your searches, compare multiple suppliers, and read reviews and transaction history.

Trade Fairs

The same guide notes that the Canton Fair is held in April and October in three phases over about three weeks, and that attending lets you meet suppliers face to face, explore more than 100 product categories, and check quality directly. Even if you cannot attend, Cogoport suggests checking the fair's exhibitor list, since participation suggests international trade experience.

Referrals

Recommendations from other business owners remain among the most reliable sources. WorldFirst notes there is no better way to find reliable suppliers than direct referrals. Industry groups, online communities, and peers in your niche may point you toward trustworthy partners.

How to Vet a Supplier

Verification is the step that separates smooth projects from costly mistakes. Use several checks together:

Business license. Ask for the company's registration documents and confirm that the name and scope match what the supplier claims. Cogoport notes that Alibaba and other platforms authenticate business licenses for paying members, with details available in a supplier's verification section.
Company background. Check years in business, production capacity, staff size, and export experience.
Reputation. Look at transaction history, response rates, and reviews.
Live video tour. Request a video call from the factory floor or showroom to confirm the operation exists as described.
References. Ask for contact details of past international clients.
Communication. Reliable suppliers answer clearly, promptly, and consistently.
Certifications. Depending on your product, ask about quality management or safety certifications.
Third-party audit. MWT Sourcing calls a third-party factory audit the most reliable verification tool for any meaningful order.

Samples: Test Before You Commit

Never place a large order based on photos alone. Order samples from two or three suppliers and compare:

Materials and construction. For apparel, check fabric weight, stitching, seams, zippers, buttons, and finishing.
Sizing accuracy. Compare measurements with the supplier's size chart. Sizing standards differ between markets, so confirm specifics.
Color accuracy. Screens and printing can misrepresent shades.
Washing and wear. Wash and wear samples to see how they hold up.
Packaging and labeling. Review how items arrive and whether labels meet requirements in your country.
Consistency. Ask whether bulk production will match the sample.

Keep an approved sample on file as a reference for later disputes.

Questions to Ask Every Supplier

What is your minimum order quantity, and is it flexible?
What is your production lead time, and how does it change in busy seasons?
Can you customize design, labels, or packaging?
What materials do you use, and can you supply specifications?
How do you handle quality control?
What payment terms do you accept?
What shipping methods do you support?
What is your policy for defects, delays, and returns?
Can you provide references or past export documentation?

Write down the answers and keep all agreements in writing.

Payment Safety

Payment is where scams and disputes often occur. Protect yourself by:

Using protected payment methods. Some marketplaces offer escrow-style protection that holds funds until you confirm receipt. A 2026 China trade guide recommends keeping every payment inside Alibaba's Trade Assurance when buying on that platform, noting it holds money in escrow and gives buyers a dispute path.
Verifying account details. Make sure the payee name matches the verified company name, and be suspicious of requests to send money to a personal account.
Avoiding full upfront payment with unverified suppliers. Staged payments tied to production milestones are common.
Keeping records of invoices, contracts, messages, and receipts.
Watching for pressure. Urgent demands for immediate transfers are a warning sign.

Red Flags

Supplier refuses a video tour, samples, or document checks.
Business license does not match the company name.
Extremely low quotes far below the market.
Vague answers about materials, capacity, or lead times.
Pressure to leave the platform and communicate only through private chat.
Requests to wire money to a personal account.
Photos that look copied or inconsistent across listings.
No verifiable physical address.

Planning Quality Control

Quality control protects your investment. Practical steps include:

Write detailed specifications, including materials, measurements, tolerances, colors, and packaging.
Approve a pre-production sample before mass production begins.
Schedule inspections. Third-party inspectors can check goods during or before shipment against your specifications.
Define acceptable defect levels in the contract.
Document everything with photos and written reports.

Shipping and Import Basics

Getting goods from China to your customers involves several moving parts:

Shipping methods. Sea freight is typically slower and suited to large volumes, while air freight is faster for urgent or lightweight shipments.
Trade terms. Understand terms that define who handles shipping, insurance, and customs at each stage. Confirm which party is responsible for what.
Customs and duties. Research import requirements, duty obligations, and documentation in your country before ordering.
Product compliance. Check labeling, safety, and material rules that apply to your product category, especially for apparel, children's items, and electronics.
Freight forwarders. An experienced forwarder can coordinate transport, paperwork, and delivery.
Lead time buffers. Allow extra time for production, inspection, shipping, and customs.

Protecting Your Designs and Brand

If you create original designs, protect them. Consider written agreements about confidentiality and intellectual property, register trademarks where you plan to sell, and limit what you share with suppliers until trust is established. Avoid products that infringe on other brands' intellectual property, since customs authorities may seize them.

Building a Long-Term Relationship

Once you find a reliable supplier, invest in the relationship:

Communicate clearly and respectfully, and be patient with time-zone differences.
Pay on the agreed schedule.
Share forecasts so the supplier can plan.
Start with smaller orders and grow gradually.
Give constructive feedback.
Visit in person when possible, or schedule regular video calls.

Strong relationships often lead to better reliability, flexibility, and priority during busy periods.
