Comprehensive Guide to Data Science Scholarships & Study in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a premier destination for data science, artificial intelligence, and financial technology in Europe. The country combines high-tech research centers with a thriving global banking and fintech hub.

While cost of living can be elevated, higher education costs are kept low due to public funding. This guide covers funding schemes, academic curriculum structure, prerequisites, and visa/living procedures for studying data science in Luxembourg.

1. Key Scholarship & Funding Programs

Guillaume Dupaix International Excellence Scholarship

The primary merit-based scholarship for high-achieving international applicants pursuing a Master’s degree.

Funding Amount: €5,763 per semester (up to €11,526 per academic year). Total value spans up to €23,052 across the 2-year Master's degree.
Coverage: Directly covers living expenses and university housing arrangements. Note: It does not waive semester tuition fees.
Allocation: Limited to ~30 top international students across the university annually (including 15 slots reserved for specific regions like the UK, Ibero-America, Western Balkans, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, India, etc.).
Application Deadlines:
- Non-EU/EEA Applicants: Late March
- Selection Outcome: Mid-May

Luxembourg State Financial Aid (MengStudien / CEDIES)

Target Audience: Luxembourgish nationals, EU/EEA citizens residing in Luxembourg, or children of cross-border workers working in Luxembourg.
Benefits: A combination of direct study grants, family mobility grants, and low-interest state-backed loans.
Restriction: Students receiving the Guillaume Dupaix Scholarship cannot simultaneously receive State Financial Aid.

National Research Fund (FNR) – AFR PhD Grants

Target Audience: Students continuing past their Master's to pursue a PhD in Data Science, Computational Sciences, or AI.
Benefits: Fixed-term employment contracts with research centers (e.g., SnT, LCSB) offering competitive salary packages (~€3,000+ per month gross).

2. Program Structure: Master in Data Science (MADS)

Offered by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) in collaboration with specialized research centers: the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT).

Attribute	Program Specification
Duration & ECTS	2 Years (4 Semesters) / 120 ECTS total
Language of Instruction	100% English
Tuition Fee	€400 per semester (€1,600 total across 2 years)
Non-EU Application Window	February 1 – March 24
EU Application Window	February 1 – July 15
Final Semester Requirement	Mandatory 6-month Master Thesis or Industry Internship

Core Modules & Curriculum Breakdown

Mathematics for Data Science: Focuses on Optimization & Probabilistic Methods for Machine Learning, Mathematical Statistics, and Functional Analysis.
Programming & Data Management: Python & R for Data Science, Advanced SQL, NoSQL Databases, Cloud Distributed Computing (Hadoop, HDFS, Spark).
Machine Learning & AI: Deep Learning, Graph Theory/Network Mathematics, Signal Processing, and Data Mining.
Specialized Applications & Ethics: Applied Data Ethics, Applied AI in Life Sciences/Biomedicine, Actuarial Sciences, and Financial Engineering.

3. Academic Eligibility & Admission Criteria

Selection for the MADS program is competitive due to small class sizes (~20–30 students per cohort).

Degree Background: Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS equivalent) in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or Economics.
Mathematics Prerequisites: Admissions heavily focus on prior higher mathematics coursework. Candidates must demonstrate strong university-level grades in:
- Linear Algebra (Matrix decompositions, vector spaces)
- Mathematical Analysis & Multivariable Calculus
- Probability and Basic Statistics
Language Requirements: Minimum B2 level in English (IELTS 6.5+, TOEFL 87+, or an official letter certifying English as the Medium of Instruction during prior studies).

4. Step-by-Step Application Workflow

Step 1: Document Assembly
- Official Academic Transcripts & Degree Certificates.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) explicitly listing all university mathematics courses taken alongside the local grading scale used.
- Statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter.
- Two Academic/Professional Recommendation Letters.
- English Proficiency Certificate.
Step 2: Submit Application
- Submit online via the official University of Luxembourg Admissions Portal.
Step 3: Scholarship Invitation
- Candidates evaluated as \"Excellent\" by the academic selection jury receive an invitation via email to apply directly for the Guillaume Dupaix Scholarship.
Step 4: Visa & Arrival Preparation (Non-EU Students)
- Temporary Authorisation to Stay (AST): Non-EU students must apply for an AST from the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs upon receiving their admission letter.
- Proof of Solvency: Non-EU students must prove financial resources of at least €1,000–€1,200 per month to secure a visa (a scholarship award certificate satisfies this requirement).
- Student Housing: University of Luxembourg residences cost between €400 and €750 per month (all utilities included). Accepted Guillaume Dupaix scholars receive priority placement in university dorms.
