How Costco Car Insurance Works in 2026

Costco provides members with access to auto insurance through American Family Insurance. The policy itself is issued and managed by the insurance company rather than Costco.

This distinction is important because Costco membership does not create one standardized insurance plan. Instead, drivers generally receive personalized pricing based on information submitted during the quote process.

When requesting insurance pricing, consumers may be asked to provide details such as:

Driver age and driving experience
Driving and claims history
Vehicle make, model, and year
Estimated annual mileage
ZIP code or garaging location
Number of drivers in the household
Current or previous insurance history
Desired liability limits
Comprehensive and collision coverage selections
Deductible amounts

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that insurance companies use underwriting and rating methods to estimate risk and determine premiums. These methods vary among insurers and may also vary according to state insurance laws.

As a result, a Costco member in one state may receive a very different rate from another Costco member with a similar vehicle in another state.

Understanding Costco Auto Insurance Rates

There is no universal Costco auto insurance rate for senior drivers or other age groups.

The price of a policy is calculated using multiple factors that are evaluated together. Age may be one factor where permitted, but it is generally not the only consideration.

For example, two drivers who are both 68 years old may receive different premiums because one drives 4,000 miles per year while the other drives 15,000 miles. Their vehicles, driving histories, locations, deductibles, and coverage limits may also differ.

Common Factors That Can Affect Auto Insurance Rates

Driving Record

Drivers with recent accidents, claims, or moving violations may receive different pricing from drivers with longer periods of incident-free driving.

Location

Insurance costs can vary by ZIP code because insurers consider local accident frequency, repair costs, theft rates, weather risks, traffic conditions, and other geographic factors.

Vehicle Type

Vehicle value, repair costs, safety equipment, theft risk, and parts availability can all influence insurance pricing.

Annual Mileage

Drivers who travel fewer miles may have a different risk profile from drivers who spend more time on the road.

For some retirees, annual mileage may decline after leaving full-time employment, making it useful to update mileage information when requesting a new quote.

Coverage Limits

Higher liability limits generally provide more financial protection but can also affect the premium.

Deductibles

A deductible is the amount a policyholder may need to pay before certain types of insurance coverage apply.

A higher deductible can change the premium, but it also means the driver may be responsible for more out-of-pocket costs after a covered claim.

What Are Seniors Paying for Costco Car Insurance in 2026?

There is no single fixed price for Costco car insurance in 2026 because auto insurance premiums are personalized based on each driver’s profile, vehicle, location, and selected coverage. Costco members may have access to membership-related savings, but the final premium still depends on underwriting criteria and state-specific insurance rules.

When comparing potential costs, several factors can influence what a driver may pay:

Driving history: Accidents, claims, and traffic violations can affect the quoted premium.
Location: Rates may vary by state, ZIP code, local traffic patterns, repair costs, and claim frequency.
Vehicle details: The make, model, age, value, and safety features of a vehicle can influence insurance pricing.
Annual mileage: How often and how far a vehicle is driven may affect the insurer’s assessment of risk.
Coverage limits: Higher liability limits and additional protection can increase the overall premium.
Deductible choices: Selecting a higher or lower deductible changes both the premium and potential out-of-pocket costs after a covered claim.
Membership-related savings: Eligible Costco members may receive savings depending on the policy, location, underwriting company, and applicable requirements.
Optional coverage: Roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, comprehensive coverage, and other additions can also affect the final cost.

Because these factors differ from one driver to another, the most useful way to understand potential Costco car insurance costs is to request a personalized quote and compare it with other insurers using similar coverage limits, deductibles, and policy features.

Costco Car Insurance Options for Seniors by Age Group

Senior drivers do not all have the same insurance needs. Changes in commuting, retirement, annual mileage, vehicle use, and household driving arrangements can influence what type of coverage may be appropriate.

The following age groups can serve as a practical framework for reviewing insurance considerations.

Age Group	Common Considerations	Areas to Compare
Ages 55–64	Some drivers may still commute regularly, while others may begin reducing work-related driving or preparing for retirement.	Annual mileage, liability limits, deductible levels, multi-vehicle coverage, member savings
Ages 65–74	Retirement may reduce commuting and change vehicle usage patterns.	Mileage estimates, roadside assistance, collision and comprehensive coverage, rental reimbursement
Ages 75–84	Driving frequency, vehicle value, and household transportation needs may change further.	Claims support, roadside services, vehicle usage, deductible amounts, policy management
Ages 85+	Individual driving habits and household transportation arrangements become especially important.	Listed drivers, vehicle use, liability protection, optional coverage, policy conditions

These categories are informational rather than official Costco insurance plan classifications.

A driver’s actual rate depends on the insurer’s underwriting process, state requirements, policy selections, and personal driving profile.

Member Savings and Costco Membership

One reason Costco members may research this insurance program is the possibility of membership-related savings.

The amount available can vary according to eligibility requirements, state rules, membership type, underwriting criteria, and policy structure. Membership alone does not guarantee a specific premium.

Consumers should therefore compare the final quoted premium rather than focusing only on an advertised membership benefit.

When reviewing a quote, it can be helpful to ask:

Which membership-related savings are included?
Are there eligibility requirements?
Do the savings continue automatically at renewal?
Can the amount change if the policy changes?
Does moving to another state affect eligibility?
Are certain savings tied to specific coverage types?

These questions can help consumers understand the actual cost of the policy rather than relying on general advertising language.

Additional Benefits for Eligible Costco Members

Costco’s insurance information may also describe additional policy features for certain qualifying members.

Depending on membership type, location, and policy eligibility, these may include services such as roadside assistance or other policy-related benefits.

However, availability may differ by state and underwriting company.

Drivers should review the actual policy language to understand:

Coverage limits
Service restrictions
Geographic limitations
Eligibility rules
Renewal conditions
Exclusions
Additional costs, if applicable

A benefit that appears useful should still be considered together with the total premium and overall coverage.

Understanding Costco Car Insurance Plans

Consumers sometimes search for Costco car insurance plans, but auto insurance is usually customized rather than sold as one fixed package.

A policy may contain several different types of protection.

Liability Coverage

Liability insurance can help pay for covered injuries or property damage when the insured driver is legally responsible for an accident.

Most states require drivers to maintain minimum levels of auto insurance or another approved form of financial responsibility.

State minimum requirements vary considerably, so drivers should check the rules where they live.

Some consumers choose liability limits above the required minimum because higher limits may provide greater financial protection after a serious accident.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage generally helps pay for covered damage to the policyholder’s vehicle after a collision, subject to the deductible and policy terms.

Drivers with newer or higher-value vehicles may view this coverage differently from drivers with older vehicles that have relatively low market values.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage generally applies to certain non-collision events, which may include theft, hail, falling objects, vandalism, or other covered losses.

Exact coverage depends on the insurance contract.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This type of coverage may help protect the insured driver when another motorist does not have enough insurance to cover a qualifying loss.

Requirements and availability vary by state.

Rental Reimbursement

Rental reimbursement may help with transportation expenses while a covered vehicle is being repaired after a qualifying claim.

Limits, daily maximums, and eligibility rules should be reviewed carefully.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance can help with situations such as towing, battery problems, flat tires, or lockouts, depending on the policy terms.

Older drivers who frequently travel long distances may consider this feature when comparing policies.

Is Costco Car Insurance Right for Every Senior Driver?

No single insurer is likely to be the best choice for every driver.

Costco members may find the program worth including in their comparison because membership-related savings and policy benefits may be available. However, the final decision should be based on the actual quote, coverage, deductible structure, policy terms, service features, and insurer suitability.

A driver ages 55–64 may prioritize different factors from someone ages 75–84 or 85+.

For example, one person may focus on commuting coverage and multiple vehicles, while another may prioritize roadside assistance, reduced mileage, straightforward policy management, or transportation support following a covered claim.

The most appropriate policy depends on individual circumstances rather than age alone.

Conclusion

Costco car insurance in 2026 may be one option for U.S. Costco members who are comparing auto insurance rates, coverage, member savings, and policy benefits.

Rather than providing one fixed Costco price or separate policies for ages 55–64, 65–74, 75–84, and 85+, auto insurance is generally personalized according to the driver, vehicle, location, driving record, mileage, selected protection, deductibles, state requirements, and underwriting rules.

Older drivers may find it particularly useful to review annual mileage, vehicle use, liability protection, roadside assistance, deductibles, and membership-related benefits as their driving circumstances change.

A Costco auto quote can provide useful information, but it should be compared with other insurance quotes using similar limits and coverage. Consumers should review current policy documents and official provider information before making a decision.
