Key Takeaways & Program Details

Income Protection: Disability coverage replaces a percentage of your regular gross income (typically 50% to 70%) if a qualifying medical condition prevents you from working.
Member Savings & Discounts: Costco members often receive exclusive policy rates, reduced administrative fees, or bonus coverage options depending on their membership tier (Gold Star vs. Executive).
Flexible Coverage Options: Policyholders can choose between Short-Term Disability (STD) for brief recovery periods and Long-Term Disability (LTD) for extended or permanent illnesses.
Supplemental to Employer Benefits: Member disability coverage can be used to supplement existing employer-provided group policies or provide primary protection for self-employed individuals and independent contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does disability insurance differ from Workers' Compensation?

Workers' Compensation only covers injuries or illnesses that occur directly on the job. Individual disability insurance covers non-occupational injuries, severe illnesses, and accidents that happen outside of work.

Do I lose my coverage if I cancel my Costco membership?

Depending on the specific policy terms with the underlying insurance carrier, canceling your Costco membership may result in the loss of member-exclusive premium discounts upon policy renewal.

Are disability insurance benefits taxable?

If you pay the policy premiums using individual, post-tax income (as is standard with Costco member plans), benefit payouts received during a disability are generally tax-free.

To review active partner options or request a personalized rate estimate, visit Costco.com or consult with the Social Security Administration (SSA) for government disability benchmark comparisons.
