Clickbait graphics often present life insurance like a tiered retail discount program where rates drop or change cleanly by decade. In reality, underwriting, medical history, baseline health risk, and term-length cutoffs dictate your options, not arbitrary age brackets.

Costco’s Member Advantage Life® program provides simplified term life coverage with exclusive member pricing. However, because term life insurance is designed to cover specific time horizons, entry age limits strictly restrict which term lengths you can purchase as you get older.

In-Depth Breakdown Across Life Stages

Ages 50–59: The Pre-Retirement & Peak Coverage Phase

The Financial Goal: Lock in fixed premiums while still in good health to cover active mortgages, college tuition, or the remainder of your peak income-earning years.
Available Term Options: Applicants in their 50s have access to the full portfolio of policy lengths—10-, 20-, or 30-year terms—with coverage amounts ranging from $100,000 to over $5,000,000.
Underwriting & Perks: Qualified applicants seeking under $500,000 in coverage often benefit from fluidless underwriting (where medical exam requirements may be waived based on digital health records). Purchasing a 20-year term in your early 50s guarantees locked-in, low rates well into your 70s.

Ages 60–69: The Retirement Transition & Debt Bridge

The Financial Goal: Create a safety net during the initial years of retirement to protect a spouse’s fixed income, bridge potential pension gaps, or clear late-stage household debt.
Available Term Options: 10-year and 20-year terms remain widely available. However, eligibility for 20-year policies ends around age 62 for tobacco users and around age 70 for non-tobacco users. (30-year terms are no longer available in this bracket).
Underwriting & Perks: Costco’s 5-year introductory discount helps keep initial premiums low right when you are transitioning from a full-time salary to living on fixed retirement savings or investment withdrawals.

Ages 70–79: The Short-Term Estate & Final Expense Phase

The Financial Goal: Provide temporary liquidity for estate planning, cover outstanding short-term loans, or ensure immediate funds are available for funeral and end-of-life costs.
Available Term Options: Options narrow primarily to 10-year term plans. The absolute maximum age to apply for a new 10-year term policy through Protective Life usually caps out between ages 75 and 80 (depending on state regulations and smoking status).
Underwriting & Perks: Conversion rights (which allow policyholders to swap term coverage into a permanent universal life policy without a medical exam) generally expire at age 70. Coverage secured in this age window is strictly designed for short-term financial obligations.

Ages 80+ : Existing Policy Maintenance & Alternative Coverage

The Financial Goal: Maintain existing legacy protections or secure guaranteed final expense coverage.
The Reality: New Costco term life policies are unavailable to applicants over age 75 to 80.
Available Options: If you purchased a 10- or 20-year Costco term policy earlier in life, that policy remains valid and active until its expiration date (or max renewal caps around age 85–90). Seniors over 80 who need new coverage must look outside warehouse programs to commercial whole life or guaranteed-issue final expense policies.

The 5-Year Introductory Discount: Costco policies through Protective Life feature a special member discount during the first 5 years of the policy. At Year 6, the premium steps up slightly to a locked-in, standard level rate that remains fixed for the rest of the term.
Tiered Member Benefits: Executive Members receive additional rate savings or reduced policy administration fees compared to basic Gold Star members.

Term Limits & Issue Age Matrix (Protective Life / Costco)

Initial Term Length	Max Issue Age (Non-Tobacco)	Max Issue Age (Tobacco Class)	Typical Coverage Amounts	Primary Purpose
10-Year Term	Ages 75 – 80	Age 75	$100,000 to $5,000,000	Short-term debts, estate liquidity, final expenses.
20-Year Term	Age 70	Age 62	$100,000 to $5,000,000	Income replacement, mid-stage mortgage coverage.
30-Year Term	Age 58	Age 43	$100,000 to $5,000,000	Long-term family protection, young/new home buyers.

Practical Action Plan for Seniors

Audit Health & Apply Early: Rates increase roughly 8% to 12% for every year you wait. If you are in your 50s or 60s, locking in a policy before new medical conditions arise secures significantly lower rates.
Account for Year 6 Premium Adjustments: Factor the Year 6 rate step-up into your long-term retirement budget so there are no surprises when the introductory 5-year discount ends.
Explore Direct Alternatives if Over 75: If you are past the maximum issue age for term insurance, work with an independent broker to compare guaranteed-issue whole life policies, which do not require medical exams or age-based term cutoffs.
