Umbrella insurance can provide an additional layer of personal liability protection when the liability limits of an underlying insurance policy are not sufficient to cover a large eligible claim.

For Costco members researching umbrella insurance in 2026, Costco currently provides access to insurance options through American Family Insurance. Costco's current insurance information specifically identifies umbrella insurance as one of the additional coverage options available to members.

This can make umbrella coverage worth investigating for households that already carry auto or homeowners insurance and want to evaluate whether their existing liability limits provide enough protection.

Unlike a standard homeowners policy, umbrella insurance is not primarily designed to insure the physical structure of a home. Instead, it generally provides additional liability protection above qualifying underlying policies.

Understanding coverage limits, underlying insurance requirements, exclusions, premiums, bundling opportunities, and quote differences is therefore important before selecting a policy.

What Is Costco Umbrella Insurance?

Costco does not directly underwrite personal umbrella insurance.

Insurance services promoted to Costco members are provided through American Family Insurance. Costco's current member information says members can obtain personalized quotes for auto, home and umbrella insurance.

This distinction matters because the insurer—not Costco—determines matters such as:

Eligibility
Underwriting
Policy limits
Premium
Covered losses
Exclusions
Required underlying coverage
Claims handling
State availability

Costco provides the member relationship and access to participating insurance services, while the actual insurance contract is issued by the applicable insurer.

How Umbrella Insurance Works

Personal umbrella insurance is designed to extend liability protection beyond the limits available through certain underlying insurance policies.

Costco describes umbrella insurance as an additional layer of protection that extends the liability limits of an auto or home policy.

Consider a simplified example.

Suppose an eligible liability claim resulted in:

$700,000 of covered damages

and the applicable underlying policy provided:

$500,000 of liability coverage.

That could potentially leave:

$200,000

above the underlying policy limit.

An applicable umbrella policy could potentially respond to the excess amount, subject to the umbrella policy's terms, limits, exclusions and underlying insurance requirements.

This example is illustrative only and does not represent a specific American Family Insurance claim or guarantee of coverage.

Why Consider Umbrella Liability Insurance?

A serious liability event can potentially create expenses substantially higher than the limits carried on a standard auto or homeowners policy.

Depending on the policy and circumstances, liability exposure could arise from events involving:

Serious automobile accidents
Injuries occurring on property
Certain incidents involving household members
Certain rental-property exposures
Other covered personal liability situations

The purpose of an umbrella policy is not to replace the underlying auto or home insurance.

Instead, it generally sits above qualifying underlying liability coverage.

That is why someone researching umbrella insurance should review both the umbrella policy and the liability limits already carried on other insurance policies.

Costco Umbrella Insurance Coverage

The exact protection available through an umbrella policy depends on the policy contract and underwriting requirements.

In general, personal umbrella insurance is intended to provide excess personal liability protection after the applicable underlying liability limits have been reached.

Potential areas to investigate when requesting a Costco-member umbrella insurance quote include:

Coverage Area	What to Review
Personal liability	Types of eligible claims covered
Auto liability	Required underlying auto limits
Home liability	Required homeowners liability limits
Rental property	Whether eligible properties can be included
Legal defense	How defense expenses are treated
Household members	Who qualifies as an insured
Policy limit	Maximum umbrella protection
Exclusions	Events specifically excluded
Territory	Geographic coverage conditions

The actual policy documents should determine coverage rather than a general description of umbrella insurance.

Umbrella Insurance Limits

Umbrella insurance is commonly purchased in substantial liability limits because it is designed for claims that exceed underlying policy protection.

The appropriate amount can vary considerably between households.

Someone evaluating an umbrella policy may want to consider:

Home equity
Savings
Investments
Vehicles
Rental properties
Future income
Household drivers
Recreational vehicles
Boats
Overall liability exposure

A household with substantial assets may evaluate liability protection differently from a household with relatively limited assets.

There is no single umbrella insurance limit that is appropriate for every Costco member.

How Much Does Costco Umbrella Insurance Cost?

There is no single published Costco umbrella insurance price that applies to every member.

Premiums are determined according to the individual risk and policy.

Factors that may influence an umbrella insurance quote can include:

Requested coverage limit
Number of homes
Number of vehicles
Number and age of drivers
Driving history
Rental properties
Boats or recreational vehicles
Existing insurance
Location
Underwriting characteristics

For that reason, Costco umbrella insurance cost should be determined through a personalized quote rather than an assumed flat member price.

Costco currently directs members toward personalized insurance quotes through American Family Insurance.

Costco Umbrella Insurance Quotes

A personalized quote can help determine both eligibility and actual premium.

When requesting an umbrella insurance quote, consumers may need information about their existing insurance and household risks.

Useful information to have available can include:

Current auto insurance

Liability limits
Number of vehicles
Drivers
Driving history

Current homeowners insurance

Liability limit
Property details
Additional insured properties

Other exposures

Rental properties
Boats
Recreational vehicles
Additional residences

The insurer can then determine which policy options are available and whether changes to the underlying insurance are necessary.

Underlying Auto Insurance Requirements

Umbrella coverage typically works in conjunction with underlying liability insurance.

That makes the limits on the auto policy particularly important.

If the insurer requires a certain level of auto liability coverage before issuing an umbrella policy, a household carrying lower limits may have to increase those limits first.

This can affect the real cost of purchasing umbrella insurance.

For example, a consumer should not evaluate only:

Umbrella premium

but potentially:

Cost of increasing underlying auto liability + umbrella premium.

The required limits should be confirmed directly during the quote process.

Underlying Home Insurance Requirements

The same concept can apply to homeowners liability insurance.

Home insurance typically contains personal liability protection, while umbrella insurance can provide additional eligible liability coverage above qualifying underlying limits.

Someone requesting an umbrella quote should therefore review the liability section of the homeowners policy.

Important questions include:

What is my current personal liability limit?
What minimum limit is required for umbrella eligibility?
Would my homeowners premium change if I increase that limit?
Which household members are covered?
Are additional properties included?
What exclusions apply?

Understanding the underlying policy makes the umbrella quote easier to evaluate.

Costco Auto, Home and Umbrella Insurance

One reason Costco's insurance relationship can be commercially relevant for umbrella shoppers is that American Family Insurance provides car, home and umbrella insurance options for Costco members.

Keeping related policies with one insurance provider can potentially simplify policy administration.

It can also create an opportunity to investigate bundling or multi-policy discounts.

American Family Insurance currently states that qualifying customers who purchase more than one insurance policy through the company may be eligible for its Multi-Product discount. Eligibility and availability depend on the policy and underwriting conditions.

That makes it useful to compare:

Auto only

versus

Auto + home

versus

Auto + home + umbrella

based on the actual quoted premiums and coverage.

Costco Member Insurance Discounts

Costco currently advertises an exclusive member discount on qualifying auto and home insurance through American Family Insurance.

Additional discounts may also be available depending on the customer and policies.

However, consumers should not assume that a Costco auto or home member discount automatically translates into a specific percentage discount on an umbrella policy.

Eligibility and underwriting conditions apply, and insurance availability differs by state.

The most useful approach is to request the complete quote and compare the total premium.

Costco Executive Member Insurance Benefits

Executive membership can provide certain additional insurance benefits on qualifying policies.

American Family Insurance currently says Costco Executive Members can receive benefits including lifetime renewability, 24-hour roadside assistance and home lockout assistance with most eligible policies, subject to state and policy restrictions.

These benefits should not be confused with additional umbrella liability limits.

Someone comparing Gold Star and Executive membership should verify which benefits apply to the specific policies being quoted.

Umbrella Insurance for Homeowners

Homeowners can face liability exposures that extend beyond damage to the house itself.

Examples might include certain covered incidents involving:

Visitors
Household activities
Pets
Swimming pools
Recreational features
Household members

A homeowners policy may already provide liability protection, but its coverage has a limit.

Umbrella insurance is designed to add another layer of qualifying liability coverage above applicable underlying limits.

Homeowners considering umbrella coverage should therefore review both policies together.

Umbrella Insurance for Drivers

Automobile accidents are another major reason people investigate personal umbrella insurance.

Auto liability insurance has policy limits.

A serious accident involving substantial injuries or property damage could potentially result in a liability claim that exceeds those limits.

Umbrella coverage may provide additional protection for qualifying excess liability, subject to policy conditions.

Households with:

Multiple vehicles
Several drivers
Teen drivers
Frequent driving
Higher-value assets

may have particular reason to review their overall liability protection.

That does not mean every driver requires umbrella insurance. The decision depends on individual risk tolerance, assets, insurance limits and financial circumstances.

Umbrella Insurance for Rental Property Owners

Rental-property ownership can create additional liability considerations.

Property owners considering umbrella coverage should determine whether their rental properties can be included and what underlying landlord or property liability coverage is required.

Important questions can include:

How many rental properties can be covered?
What underlying liability limits are required?
Are short-term rentals treated differently?
Are all properties eligible?
Does the umbrella policy contain rental-property exclusions?

These details can vary significantly between insurers and policies.

Umbrella Insurance and Boats or Recreational Vehicles

Some households own assets beyond standard automobiles and a primary residence.

These might include:

Boats
Motorcycles
RVs
ATVs
Classic cars
Vacation properties

Costco's insurance offering also identifies specialty insurance options for several of these categories.

Anyone owning these assets should ask whether they create additional umbrella insurance requirements or can be included within the applicable liability structure.

What Umbrella Insurance May Not Cover

Umbrella insurance is broad liability protection, but it is not unlimited insurance for every financial loss.

Policy exclusions matter.

Depending on the contract, exclusions or restrictions can involve matters such as:

Intentional acts
Certain business activities
Certain professional liabilities
Contractual liabilities
Certain property losses
Risks not properly covered by required underlying insurance

The actual policy wording controls coverage.

This is why comparing umbrella policies solely on premium can be misleading.

A lower-cost policy is not necessarily better if its coverage, exclusions or underlying requirements differ substantially.

Umbrella Insurance vs Homeowners Insurance

These policies serve different purposes.

Feature	Homeowners Insurance	Umbrella Insurance
Home structure	Commonly covered for insured events	Generally not its primary purpose
Personal belongings	Commonly included	Generally not primary coverage
Personal liability	Included up to policy limit	Additional qualifying liability
Property damage to home	Core coverage area	Not replacement property coverage
Excess liability	Limited to home policy limit	Primary purpose of umbrella coverage

Umbrella insurance should generally be viewed as an additional liability layer, not as a replacement for homeowners insurance.

Umbrella Insurance vs Auto Insurance

Auto insurance includes liability protection associated with covered vehicle-related claims.

Umbrella insurance can potentially extend qualifying liability protection beyond the applicable auto policy limits.

For example:

Auto insurance = underlying liability policy

Umbrella insurance = additional qualifying liability layer

Both policies need to be evaluated together.

Umbrella Insurance vs Excess Liability Insurance

The terms \"umbrella insurance\" and \"excess liability insurance\" are sometimes used interchangeably in consumer discussions, but policies can differ.

An excess liability policy may primarily extend the limits of an underlying policy.

A personal umbrella policy may have broader provisions depending on the insurer and contract.

Consumers should compare the actual policy language rather than relying only on the product name.

Who May Want to Consider Umbrella Insurance?

There is no single profile that automatically requires an umbrella policy.

However, people may decide to investigate additional liability protection if they have:

Significant savings
Home equity
Investments
Multiple vehicles
Multiple household drivers
Rental properties
Recreational vehicles
Boats
Higher liability exposure
Concerns about protecting accumulated assets

A quote can help establish the actual cost before deciding whether the additional coverage fits the household's insurance strategy.

How to Compare Umbrella Insurance Quotes

Comparing insurance quotes should involve more than comparing premiums.

Consider creating a side-by-side comparison:

Comparison	Quote A	Quote B
Umbrella limit	Review	Review
Annual premium	Review	Review
Auto limits required	Review	Review
Home limits required	Review	Review
Rental properties	Review	Review
Vehicles included	Review	Review
Household drivers	Review	Review
Legal defense	Review	Review
Major exclusions	Review	Review
Bundle discount	Review	Review

This helps reveal whether two apparently similar umbrella policies actually provide comparable protection.

Comparing Costco Umbrella Insurance With Other Providers

Costco members do not have to evaluate only one insurance provider.

Umbrella coverage can also be compared with policies available from other major insurers.

Depending on location and eligibility, consumers may encounter companies such as:

State Farm
Allstate
GEICO
Progressive
Travelers
Nationwide
USAA
Farmers
Liberty Mutual

Availability and underwriting differ.

The useful comparison is not simply which insurer advertises the lowest starting price.

Instead, compare:

Coverage limit

Annual premium

Required underlying limits

Bundling

Exclusions

Claims considerations

Eligibility

Total insurance cost

Questions to Ask Before Buying Umbrella Insurance

Before purchasing coverage, consider asking:

What umbrella limits are available?
What will my annual premium be?
What auto liability limits are required?
What homeowners liability limits are required?
Will I need to increase my existing limits?
Which household members are covered?
Are all household vehicles covered?
Can rental properties be included?
Can boats or recreational vehicles be included?
How are legal-defense costs handled?
What major exclusions apply?
Are there bundling discounts?
Does my Costco membership affect my overall insurance pricing?
Are Executive Member benefits applicable?
Is coverage available in my state?
What would the total cost of my auto, home and umbrella policies be?

These questions provide a more useful comparison than premium alone.

The central purpose of umbrella coverage is straightforward: it can provide another layer of qualifying liability protection when an eligible claim exceeds the applicable limits of an underlying auto or home insurance policy.

But choosing coverage requires more than selecting a policy limit.

Members should compare:

Umbrella insurance cost

Coverage limits

Underlying auto insurance requirements

Underlying home insurance requirements

Bundling opportunities

Policy exclusions

Household risks

Total insurance premiums

Because premiums and eligibility are individualized, requesting a personalized umbrella insurance quote is the practical way to determine what coverage and pricing are actually available.
