Upgrading your home broadband connection to full-fibre technology delivers higher internet speeds, improved reliability, and lower latency for multi-device households. NBN Co’s ongoing network expansion program allows eligible residential properties currently connected via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) to transition to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) at zero installation cost. While promotional advertisements promise a Free nbn® fibre upgrade, receiving the upgrade requires meeting specific address eligibility criteria, placing an order for a qualifying internet speed plan, and satisfying standard installation conditions. This guide explains how the upgrade program works, what plan requirements apply, and what key factors homeowners should review before requesting an upgrade.

What Is the Free nbn® Fibre Upgrade?

The free nbn® fibre upgrade replaces older copper-based lead-in infrastructure (FTTN or FTTC) with a direct fibre-optic cable running into the home (FTTP). Under NBN Co's rollout plan, standard installation fees—which include running conduit, mounting an exterior Utility Box (NTD), and installing an interior Connection Box—are covered by NBN Co. However, the physical upgrade is triggered through participating internet service providers (RSPs) when customers sign up for an eligible high-speed nbn® plan.

How to Check Eligibility and Request an Upgrade

Before ordering a new plan or requesting an installation appointment, follow these steps to verify eligibility:

Visit the NBN Co official website or your internet service provider's roll-out portal to input your street address.
Confirm that your property currently connects via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC).
Select an eligible high-speed nbn® plan (typically NBN 100/20, NBN 250, or NBN 500/50 depending on the technology type and provider terms).
Ensure the property qualifies as a simple premise without restricted access, complex structural barriers, or non-standard underground conduit requirements.
Schedule an installation appointment where an adult (18+) is present on-site to approve equipment locations.

How the Installation and Upgrade Process Works

Verify address eligibility and select a participating internet provider.
Place an order for a qualifying higher-tier speed plan.
NBN Co schedules a technician appointment for physical line installation.
The technician installs an external connection point on the outside wall and an internal nbn® Connection Box inside the home.
Once the FTTP service is activated, your internet provider switches your account to the high-speed fibre service.

Understanding Terms, Conditions, and Fine Print

While the physical installation is free for standard setups, customers must accept specific terms:

Eligible Speed Plan Required: The upgrade requires subscribing to a qualifying high-speed plan. If a customer downgrades to an ineligible low-speed plan immediately after installation, early departure fees or upgrade reimbursement charges may apply depending on provider terms.
Standard Installation Only: Free installation applies strictly to standard (\"simple\") residential setups. Non-standard installations requiring extensive trenching, custom wiring, or complex pathways may incur additional fees.
Compatible Modem/Router: High-speed FTTP connections require an FTTP-compatible router capable of handling gigabit-tier speeds.
Property Ownership: Tenants in rental properties must obtain written permission from the property owner before a technician installs external or internal hardware boxes.

Key Benefits of Full-Fibre (FTTP) Connections

Higher Speed Potential: Unlocks download speeds ranging from 100Mbps up to multi-gigabit (1000Mbps–2000Mbps) tiers.
Consistent Evening Speeds: Direct optical fibre eliminates signal degradation, copper line noise, and weather-related speed drops.
Low Latency: Offers smoother online gaming, buffer-free 4K/8K video streaming, and stable video conferencing.
Future-Proofing: Full fibre supports heavy multi-device usage and high-bandwidth smart home setups.

Factors That Affect Upgrade Eligibility and Requirements

Factor	Details & Technical Requirements
Existing Technology	Must be on FTTN or FTTC (FTTB apartment buildings and existing FTTP homes are excluded).
Minimum Speed Tier	Requires ordering an eligible high-speed plan (e.g., 100Mbps, 250Mbps, or 500Mbps+).
Installation Classification	Must qualify as a \"simple\" installation without major pathway obstruction.
Hardware Requirements	Requires an Ethernet WAN-compatible router to connect to the internal nbn® box.
On-Site Requirement	An adult (18+) must be present for the technician appointment.

Cost-Saving Considerations for Homeowners

Compare promotional introductory discounts across major providers (e.g., Telstra, Optus, Aussie Broadband, Superloop, TPG) before selecting an eligible plan.
Check if your existing router has a Gigabit WAN port so you do not need to purchase a new modem/router from your provider.
Verify whether the internet provider requires a minimum contract period (e.g., 6 or 12 months) to maintain the free upgrade offer.

How to Compare Internet Providers for FTTP Upgrades

Before committing to an upgrade order, evaluate key service details:

Monthly plan pricing during and after introductory discount periods.
Typical evening speeds during peak usage hours (7:00 PM – 11:00 PM).
Contract terms, including no-lock-in options versus fixed-term commitments.
Customer support reputation and ease of router setup.

Common Questions

Is the nbn® FTTP upgrade completely free?

Yes, standard installation by NBN Co is free. However, you must pay the monthly plan fee for the qualifying high-speed internet plan you select.

Can renters apply for a free fibre upgrade?

Yes, renters can request the upgrade through their internet provider, but landlord/property manager permission is required since installation involves mounting hardware on internal and external walls.

Will my current router work with FTTP?

Most modern routers with an Ethernet WAN port work with FTTP connections. Older modems designed strictly for copper ADSL/VDSL lines may need to be replaced.

Steps to Initiate Your Upgrade

Run an address check on NBN Co or your preferred provider's website.
Select a qualifying high-speed nbn® plan.
Submit the upgrade order to book your NBN Co technician appointment.
Prepare your property by clearing access to external wall areas and internal power outlets.
Complete installation, connect your router to the new nbn® Connection Box, and enjoy full-fibre speeds.

Conclusion

The free nbn® fibre upgrade program offers an excellent opportunity for Australian households on copper connections to upgrade to fast, reliable full-fibre internet. By confirming address eligibility, selecting a suitable high-speed plan, and preparing for standard installation, home internet users can significantly improve their network performance and future-proof their connectivity.
