What Do Hospital Cleaning Jobs Involve?

The primary responsibility of hospital housekeeping staff is to maintain clean patient-care and common areas according to facility procedures. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identifies cleaning and disinfecting hospital areas as central objectives of hospital housekeeping departments.

The work can be more structured than cleaning a typical office or commercial building because hospitals use infection-prevention procedures for different areas and situations.

Typical responsibilities may include:

Cleaning and disinfecting patient rooms and bathrooms
Wiping frequently touched surfaces such as bed rails, handles, switches, and tables
Cleaning floors, hallways, waiting rooms, and administrative areas
Emptying waste containers and handling designated waste according to facility procedures
Restocking certain housekeeping supplies
Cleaning rooms after patients are discharged or transferred
Following isolation-room or infection-control procedures when assigned
Using personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
Following instructions for cleaning chemicals and disinfectants
Reporting spills, hazards, damaged equipment, or maintenance issues

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that high-touch surfaces in patient-care environments generally require more frequent cleaning or disinfection than surfaces with minimal hand contact. Hospitals therefore commonly use standardized cleaning protocols, checklists, and schedules.

Hospital Housekeeping Jobs: Common Position Types

Someone searching for hospital housekeeping jobs may encounter several different job titles even when the underlying responsibilities are similar.

Environmental Services (EVS) Technician

EVS is a common term for hospital cleaning departments. EVS technicians may clean patient rooms, clinical areas, waiting areas, offices, restrooms, and other hospital spaces.

Housekeeping or Housekeeping Aide

A housekeeping aide generally performs routine cleaning and sanitation duties. Depending on the employer, the role may include both occupied-room cleaning and discharge-room cleaning.

Hospital Cleaner or Custodian

Some hospitals and hospital cleaning companies use more traditional titles such as cleaner, custodian, janitor, or sanitation worker. Job seekers should therefore search several related job titles rather than relying on only one term.

Floor Care Technician

These positions may focus more heavily on maintaining hard floors and carpeted areas. Employers may prefer candidates who have experience with specialized floor-care equipment, although training requirements vary.

Lead or Supervisor

Experienced housekeeping employees may eventually qualify for lead, trainer, quality-control, or supervisory roles. These positions generally require more experience and may involve staff scheduling, inspections, training, and documentation.

Do Hospital Cleaning Jobs Require Previous Experience?

Not necessarily. Some entry-level hospital cleaning positions accept applicants without previous hospital or professional cleaning experience.

The important distinction is that “no experience required” is not a universal requirement across the industry. One employer may provide complete entry-level training, while another may prefer previous housekeeping, healthcare, hotel, janitorial, or commercial cleaning experience.

Job postings may instead emphasize practical abilities such as reliability, attention to detail, following written and verbal instructions, and working safely around patients and staff.

Applicants should also review physical requirements carefully. Depending on the position, employees may spend much of a shift standing or walking and may need to bend, reach, push cleaning carts, or lift specified weights.

Hospital Cleaning Jobs by Age Group: Roles to Consider

Hospital cleaning careers can be considered by adults across a wide range of ages, including people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s or older. Age alone does not determine whether someone can perform a hospital housekeeping job. Employers generally focus on whether an applicant can meet the specific duties, scheduling requirements, safety procedures, and physical demands listed for the position. Some roles involve frequent walking, lifting, bending, or pushing cleaning equipment, while others may involve lighter cleaning, supply support, inspection, or coordination responsibilities. Applicants should therefore compare individual job descriptions and choose positions that match their experience, mobility, preferred schedule, and comfort level.

Age Group	Hospital Cleaning Roles to Explore	Typical Work Characteristics	What to Consider
Ages 40–49	Environmental Services (EVS) Technician, Hospital Housekeeper, Floor Care Technician, Discharge Room Cleaner	May involve regular walking, room cleaning, disinfecting surfaces, moving carts, and using cleaning equipment	Review lifting requirements, shift schedules, PPE procedures, and opportunities for specialized training
Ages 50–59	Hospital Housekeeper, EVS Technician, Public Area Cleaner, Patient Room Cleaner, Housekeeping Lead	Mix of routine cleaning, sanitation, patient-room turnover, and possible supervisory responsibilities	Consider schedule flexibility, physical workload, experience requirements, and whether lead roles are available
Ages 60–69	Housekeeping Aide, Public Area Cleaner, Clinic Cleaner, EVS Support Worker, Quality or Inspection Support	Some positions may focus on routine cleaning of waiting rooms, offices, clinics, hallways, or assigned patient areas	Compare walking and lifting expectations, shift length, part-time availability, and job-specific physical requirements
Ages 70+	Light-Duty Housekeeping Roles, Waiting Area or Office Cleaner, EVS Support, Supply or Cleaning Support Roles	Duties may vary from lighter cleaning assignments to restocking supplies or supporting an EVS team	Look carefully at physical requirements, working hours, workplace accommodations where applicable, and whether the role matches individual capabilities

Important: These examples are not age restrictions or guarantees of job availability. A person in any of these age groups may be qualified for a wider range of hospital cleaning positions depending on their abilities, experience, employer requirements, and the specific duties involved. Some employers may also provide training for entry-level roles, while others may require previous housekeeping or healthcare experience.

Hospital Cleaning Pay in the U.S.

Pay varies by employer, geographic area, shift, experience, union status, and specific responsibilities.

As a useful national benchmark, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a median hourly wage of $17.71 for janitors and building cleaners in May 2025. Within healthcare and social assistance, the median hourly wage was $18.35.

These figures cover a broader occupational category and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed hospital housekeeping wage. Actual hospital cleaning positions may pay below or above these amounts.

Factors that can influence compensation include:

Factor	How It May Affect Pay
Geographic location	Local wages and cost of living differ significantly
Employer type	Hospitals, government facilities, and contractors may use different pay structures
Day & Shift	Evening, overnight, weekend, or holiday shifts may have different compensation
Experience	Specialized or previous healthcare cleaning experience may be valued
Job duties	Floor care, specialized cleaning, or lead responsibilities may affect pay
Employment status	Full-time, part-time, temporary, and contract roles can have different compensation structures

Applicants should compare the actual hourly rate and expected weekly hours shown in each job posting rather than relying solely on national averages.

Competitive Pay and Bonus Opportunities: What to Check

Some hospital employers and cleaning contractors may advertise competitive pay plus bonus opportunities. A bonus, however, should never be assumed to be part of every hospital cleaning job.

Depending on the employer and current staffing needs, additional compensation may include referral bonuses, retention bonuses, hiring incentives, shift differentials, overtime opportunities, or performance-related incentives.

When reviewing a position, determine whether additional compensation is guaranteed, conditional, or available only to certain employees. For a retention bonus, for example, check how long an employee must remain in the position and whether the payment is distributed in installments.

Paid Time Off and Health Benefits

Full-time hospital housekeeping positions may include an employee benefits package, but benefits vary substantially between employers.

Possible benefits can include:

Paid time off (PTO), vacation, or sick leave
Medical insurance
Dental insurance
Vision insurance
Retirement plans
Life or disability insurance
Employee assistance programs
Paid holidays
Education or training assistance

The BLS National Compensation Survey tracks employer-sponsored benefits such as paid leave and insurance, but access varies by occupation, employer size, employment status, and industry.

Applicants should check when coverage begins, employee premium contributions, deductibles, eligibility rules, and whether part-time workers qualify.

Referral and Retention Bonuses May Be Available

Referral and retention bonuses are sometimes used by employers to support recruitment and employee retention. Availability is employer-specific and can change over time.

A referral bonus may be paid when an employee refers a qualifying candidate who is hired and meets specified employment conditions. A retention bonus generally requires an employee to remain employed for a defined period.

Before considering a bonus part of expected compensation, read the written terms carefully. Important details include eligibility, required employment duration, payment dates, minimum scheduled hours, and circumstances that could make an employee ineligible.

Is There an Upper Age Limit for Hospital Housekeeping Jobs?

Hospital cleaning work is generally based on an applicant's ability to meet legitimate job requirements rather than an arbitrary upper age cutoff.

Under the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), covered employers generally may not discriminate against applicants or employees who are 40 or older because of age. The EEOC explains that the ADEA protects people age 40 and older and that the maximum age limitation previously contained in federal law was removed.

This does not mean every applicant will qualify for every housekeeping position. Employers can establish legitimate, job-related requirements, including physical and safety requirements. Applicants should review the individual job description to understand what a particular role requires.

Hospital Employment vs. Hospital Cleaning Companies

Not every cleaner working inside a hospital is directly employed by the hospital.

Healthcare facilities may maintain an internal environmental services department, use an outside cleaning contractor, or combine both approaches.

Direct hospital employment and contractor employment can differ in several areas, including:

Comparison Point	What to Review
Employer	Hospital/health system or third-party cleaning company
Pay	Base hourly wage and shift differentials
Benefits	PTO, insurance, retirement, and eligibility dates
Schedule	Day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday requirements
Training	Initial and continuing healthcare-cleaning training
Bonuses	Referral, retention, or other incentive terms
Work location	One hospital or assignments across multiple facilities

Applicants searching hospital cleaning companies should confirm who the legal employer is before accepting a position because the employer determines wages, benefits, policies, and employment conditions.

How to Look for a Cleaning Job in a Hospital

If you are looking for a cleaning job in hospital settings, use several job-title variations when searching. Useful terms include “hospital housekeeping,” “environmental services technician,” “EVS technician,” “housekeeping aide,” “hospital cleaner,” and “custodian.”

Review the complete job posting before applying. Pay particular attention to required experience, shift hours, physical duties, background-screening requirements, training, employment status, and benefits eligibility.

For applicants without healthcare cleaning experience, previous work demonstrating reliability, customer service, sanitation, housekeeping, teamwork, or adherence to procedures may still be relevant.

How to Apply for Hospital Cleaning Jobs

Applying for hospital cleaning jobs usually starts by checking the careers section of a hospital, health system, staffing provider, or hospital cleaning company.

Search for job titles such as Hospital Housekeeper, Environmental Services (EVS) Technician, Housekeeping Aide, Cleaner, or Custodian, then review the listed duties, schedule, physical requirements, experience expectations, and benefits before submitting an application.

Most employers ask applicants to complete an online application and provide basic contact information, work history, availability, and sometimes a résumé. Entry-level applicants can highlight transferable experience such as cleaning, customer service, teamwork, reliability, and following safety procedures. Depending on the employer and role, the hiring process may also include an interview, background screening, health-related employment requirements, or job-specific training.

Because requirements vary, applicants should rely on the official job posting for the most current application instructions and eligibility criteria.

Conclusion

Hospital cleaning and environmental services employees support the cleanliness and operation of healthcare facilities. Entry-level opportunities may be available to people without previous hospital cleaning experience, and employers may provide specialized training in infection prevention, PPE, chemicals, and cleaning procedures.

Pay varies by location and employer, while PTO, medical, dental and vision insurance, referral bonuses, retention bonuses, and other benefits are employer-specific rather than guaranteed features of hospital housekeeping jobs.

People researching these positions can make more informed employment decisions by comparing the complete compensation package, schedule, training requirements, physical duties, and eligibility conditions of each opening. Current job postings and official employer information should always be used to confirm the details of a specific position.
