Government healthcare programs—primarily Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—can cover the cost of braces and orthodontic care, provided specific medical criteria are met.

Core Requirements for Government Coverage

Medical Necessity: Government programs do not cover braces for purely cosmetic or aesthetic reasons. Coverage is approved only when misaligned teeth or jaw issues cause functional health problems, such as difficulty chewing, severe speech impediments, or chronic jaw pain.
Age Limits: Under federal Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) guidelines, orthodontic benefits are primarily available to children, teens, and young adults under the age of 21. Adult coverage is extremely limited and granted only in rare, severe cases.
Qualified Conditions: Conditions that commonly qualify as medically necessary include severe overbites or underbites, cleft palate or craniofacial abnormalities, impacted teeth, or extreme crowding that prevents proper oral care.

Key Covered Services & Materials

Service / Treatment	Coverage Status	Details
Initial Evaluation & X-Rays	Covered	Diagnostics required to evaluate bite alignment and document medical necessity.
Traditional Metal Braces	Covered	Standard metal brackets and wires (as depicted in the image) are the primary covered option.
Adjustments & Retainers	Covered	Routine tightening visits and post-treatment retainers to maintain results.
Cosmetic / Clear Aligners	Rarely Covered	Clear aligners (like Invisalign) or ceramic brackets are typically excluded unless metal is medically contraindicated.

4 Steps to Get Government-Covered Braces

Find an Approved Provider: Locate a dentist or orthodontist in your state who accepts Medicaid or CHIP plans. You can search for local in-network providers through the official Insure Kids Now Dental Provider Search.
Schedule an Orthodontic Screening: Book an initial consultation where the provider will take X-rays, photos, and measurements to assess the degree of malocclusion.
Submit Prior Authorization: If the provider determines the condition meets your state's medical necessity scoring threshold, they will submit a prior authorization request with supporting clinical documentation.
Begin Treatment: Once the state Medicaid agency approves the authorization, active orthodontic treatment and fitting can begin with minimal or no out-of-pocket copays.
