There's a common misconception that turning 65 unlocks some kind of automatic upgrade to expedited airport security. It doesn't quite work that way. According to a detailed breakdown from GovPlus, there is no senior discount for TSA PreCheck, and the enrollment fee is identical for every applicant regardless of age, generally running between $76.75 and $85 depending on which provider processes the application. Here's what actually changes, and what doesn't, for older travelers.

What Age 65 Actually Changes

Turning 65 doesn't grant free or automatic PreCheck status. Travelers still need to apply, pass a background check, and pay the standard enrollment fee just like anyone else. What does shift with age is a separate accommodation: travelers who are 75 or older are permitted to keep their shoes and a light jacket on while going through standard security screening lines, without needing PreCheck at all, according to CitizenDailyPost.

It's worth noting that this particular benefit has become less distinctive recently. As of July 2025, TSA eliminated the shoe-removal requirement at security checkpoints for all travelers, not just those 75 and older, which means one of PreCheck's most commonly cited perks is now essentially universal.

What PreCheck Still Delivers

Even with the shoe-removal change applying broadly, PreCheck retains real value for older travelers who want a faster, less physically demanding screening experience. Members can generally leave laptops and permitted liquids inside their carry-on bags and typically move through a shorter, dedicated lane. Once approved, PreCheck status lasts five years before renewal is required.

There's also a family benefit worth knowing: children 12 and under can accompany a PreCheck-enrolled parent or guardian through the PreCheck lane without their own enrollment, and children 13 to 17 can do the same when traveling on the same reservation, provided the PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass.

How Global Entry Fits In

Global Entry serves a different purpose, aimed at travelers re-entering the United States after international trips. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Global Entry lets pre-approved, low-risk travelers use automated kiosks to clear customs quickly rather than waiting in standard processing lines. The enrollment fee is $120 for a five-year membership, and Global Entry membership automatically includes TSA PreCheck, so members don't need to enroll in both programs separately.

It's also worth knowing that Global Entry was briefly suspended nationwide starting February 22, 2026, during a partial government shutdown, before being restored on March 11, 2026, following pressure from the travel industry and lawmakers. As of now, the program is fully operational again.

FAQs

Do I get a discount on PreCheck or Global Entry once I turn 65?
No, there is no age-based reduction in the enrollment fee for either program.

What benefit do I get automatically at 75?
Travelers 75 and older can keep their shoes and a light jacket on during standard security screening, though this overlaps significantly with TSA's broader 2025 policy change removing shoe-removal for everyone.

Does Global Entry include PreCheck?
Yes, Global Entry membership automatically includes TSA PreCheck benefits for domestic flights.

How long does approval last once enrolled?
Both programs run on a five-year membership cycle before renewal is required.

Conclusion

For travelers over 65, the honest picture is that TSA PreCheck and Global Entry remain fee-based programs with no age-related discount, though the 75-and-older screening accommodation and Global Entry's included PreCheck benefit still make enrollment worthwhile for frequent flyers. With TSA's 2025 policy change making shoe-removal optional for everyone, the real value of these programs now comes down to shorter lines and less handling of belongings rather than the perks once considered exclusive to seniors.
