Invacare has manufactured mobility equipment for decades, and its scooter lineup spans travel-friendly portables to heavy-duty models built for larger users. Picking the right one means matching weight capacity, terrain, range, and portability to how a specific person actually lives day to day, then figuring out how to pay for it and transport it once it's home. This guide walks through the main models, the details that matter most, how Medicare and VA coverage work, and what to plan for once the scooter arrives.

Start With Weight Capacity, Not Style

Weight capacity is the single most important spec, since exceeding it compromises both safety and the scooter's mechanics. The Invacare Comet Ultra is a bariatric scooter rated for 220 kg (about 485 lbs), with an extra-wide 26-inch seat designed specifically for larger users who need more room and a sturdier frame. At the other end, standard midsize models like the Invacare Leo and Comet Pro are typically rated around 300 to 350 lbs. Always check the exact figure for a specific configuration, since capacity can shift based on added accessories, and leave some margin between rider weight and the rated maximum rather than buying right up to the limit.

Comparing the Core Models

Invacare Leo (3-Wheel and 4-Wheel). The Leo is a midsize scooter built for both indoor and outdoor use. According to its published specifications, the 4-wheel version has a 350 lb weight capacity, a 19-inch-wide by 16-inch-deep seat, a top speed of 5 mph, and an estimated range of 15 miles on a full charge. The 3-wheel version shares the same weight capacity and seat dimensions but offers a tighter turning radius and a slightly longer estimated range of 18.6 miles, making it a reasonable choice for someone who needs to maneuver through narrower indoor spaces or tighter hallway corners. Both carry a 1-year limited warranty on the frame, electronics, and transaxle.

Invacare Comet Pro. This 4-wheel scooter is positioned as a heavier-duty option, with a top speed of roughly 9.3 mph, a range up to 34 miles, pneumatic (air-filled) tires front and rear for a smoother ride over uneven pavement, and a weight capacity commonly listed between 300 and 350 lbs depending on the retailer and market. Its off-board charging system and stronger braking setup make it a fit for someone covering more ground outdoors regularly, such as errands around a neighborhood or longer walks at a park.

Invacare Comet Ultra. Built specifically for bariatric users, the Comet Ultra pairs its 220 kg capacity with a wider seat and a sturdier frame. It carries a 2-year warranty, longer than the standard 1-year term on the Leo and Comet Pro, which reflects its heavier-duty construction and the added engineering that goes into a higher weight rating.

Invacare Colibri. For someone who travels frequently or has limited storage space, Invacare also makes portable options like the Colibri, designed to disassemble into lighter, more manageable pieces for transport in a car trunk. Portable scooters generally trade some weight capacity and range for lighter overall weight and easier handling, which matters most for people who need to load and unload a scooter themselves multiple times a week.

Indoor Versus Outdoor Use Changes the Right Choice

A scooter meant mainly for navigating a home differs meaningfully from one meant for sidewalks, parks, or errands. Pneumatic tires, like those on the Comet Pro, absorb bumps better on rough outdoor pavement, while smaller, tighter-turning models suit narrow hallways and doorways indoors. If a person splits time between both environments, a midsize model like the Leo, which is rated for both, is often the more practical starting point than a specialized indoor-only or heavy-duty outdoor unit. It's also worth measuring actual doorway widths and hallway turns at home before finalizing a model, since a scooter that looks compact in a showroom can still be too wide for a tight bathroom doorway.

Range and Battery Considerations

Estimated range varies significantly by model, from around 15 miles on the Leo 4-wheel up to 34 miles on the Comet Pro. Real-world range depends on rider weight, terrain, incline, and battery age, so treat manufacturer figures as best-case estimates rather than guaranteed distances. Anyone planning regular longer outings should factor in a meaningful buffer below the advertised maximum, and should ask a supplier about expected battery lifespan and replacement charges upfront, since batteries are a wear item that eventually needs swapping regardless of how well the scooter itself holds up.

Accessories Worth Considering

A base scooter model can be adapted with a number of add-ons: LED lighting for visibility, storage baskets, phone holders, mirrors, safety flags for outdoor visibility, weather covers, and portable ramps for curbs or single steps. A holder for a cane or walker is also a practical add-on for anyone who occasionally needs to transition between mobility aids. Basic accessories like mirrors, baskets, and lights are often included or approved automatically under VA coverage, though custom add-ons may need separate approval.

Getting the Scooter From Home to the Car

Transporting a scooter is its own planning challenge, particularly for midsize and heavier models. Options generally fall into three categories: hitch-mounted exterior platform carriers, which are the most affordable at roughly $500 to $2,500 installed; powered interior hoist lifts for vans and SUVs, which run $2,500 to $6,000 installed; and fully enclosed van conversions for people who need to transport a scooter regularly and want it fully protected from weather. The scooter's total weight, including the battery pack, is the number that determines which lift or carrier rating is needed, since exceeding a hitch's rated capacity is a real safety hazard.

For lighter or portable models like the Colibri, manual loading into a trunk may be entirely feasible without any added equipment. Key steps for any manual loading include confirming the scooter's folded or disassembled dimensions actually fit the vehicle, powering off the scooter and removing the key before handling it, and disconnecting or securing the battery separately if the model calls for it. Anyone leaving a scooter on an exterior platform overnight should cover it to protect against weather, and covered parking is preferable when possible.

Does Medicare Cover an Invacare Scooter?

Medicare Part B classifies power-operated vehicles, its formal term for mobility scooters, as durable medical equipment (DME). Coverage requires several specific steps to be completed in order:

A face-to-face exam. A Medicare-enrolled physician must examine the patient in person and document mobility limitations within the home.
A written prescription. The prescription must be a complete seven-element written order and submitted within 45 days of the face-to-face exam, or the claim can be denied on a technicality alone.
Medical necessity for in-home use. Medicare's test is specifically whether the device is needed to move around inside the home, not primarily for outdoor errands.
A Medicare-enrolled DME supplier. The scooter must be purchased or rented through an approved supplier for the claim to process.

Once approved, Medicare Part B generally pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount after the annual Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026. A Medigap plan like Plan G can often cover the remaining deductible and coinsurance. It's worth noting Medicare specifically requires that a scooter, rather than a more expensive power wheelchair, be considered first if the person has enough upper body strength to safely steer one.

VA Coverage for Veterans

Veterans with a service-connected mobility disability have a separate, often more comprehensive path. The VA's Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) can provide a complete scooter selected based on a medical assessment, along with delivery, training, ongoing repairs for normal wear, and battery replacements, generally at no charge to the veteran. This level of coverage typically requires the mobility limitation to be tied to a service-connected disability; veterans without a service-connected condition may still qualify through Medicare or state Medicaid instead. The process starts with a consultation with a VA healthcare provider, followed by a clinical evaluation and PSAS approval, and can take roughly four to twelve weeks from application to delivery. A driving safety assessment is often part of the process to confirm the veteran can operate the device safely.

FAQs

What's the difference between the Leo 3-wheel and 4-wheel?
Both share the same weight capacity and seat dimensions, but the 3-wheel offers a tighter turning radius and slightly longer range, while the 4-wheel provides a more stable base.

Do I need a bariatric model like the Comet Ultra?
If the rider's weight approaches or exceeds a standard scooter's 300 to 350 lb capacity, a bariatric-rated model with a wider seat and reinforced frame is the safer choice.

Will Medicare cover an Invacare scooter for outdoor use only?
No. Medicare's coverage test centers on in-home mobility need, not primarily outdoor use, even though an approved scooter can certainly be used outside as well.

How long does the Medicare approval process typically take?
It depends on how quickly the face-to-face exam, written order, and supplier documentation are completed, but missing the 45-day submission window after the exam is one of the most common causes of denial.

What if I'm a veteran without a service-connected disability?
VA coverage for a mobility scooter generally requires the condition to be service-connected, so a veteran without that designation would typically pursue coverage through Medicare or Medicaid instead.

Do I need a special lift to transport a heavier scooter?
For midsize and heavy-duty models, yes, since a hitch-mounted carrier or powered lift rated for the scooter's full weight, including the battery, is generally necessary for safe transport.

Conclusion

Choosing the right Invacare scooter starts with weight capacity and where it will be used most, indoors, outdoors, or a mix of both, before comparing range, tire type, warranty terms, and accessory needs across models like the Leo, Comet Pro, and Comet Ultra. Transportation is worth planning for early, since a heavier model may require a dedicated vehicle lift rather than manual loading. For anyone hoping Medicare or VA benefits will help cover the expense, completing the required exams, prescriptions, and supplier paperwork promptly is the step most likely to determine whether a claim is approved without delay.
