Manulife offers several life insurance options in Canada for older adults, spanning traditional underwritten plans, simplified issues, and direct-to-consumer options (such as CoverMe®).

While online infographics display arbitrary age brackets (ages 55–59 through 80–85+), Manulife's actual plan eligibility and underwriting criteria depend on product type, age at application, and medical history.

Core Senior Insurance Options

Manulife Guaranteed Issue Life: Available to Canadian residents aged 18 to 75 (or 40 to 75 under CoverMe® Guaranteed Issue) with no medical exams or health questions. Features level premiums, permanent coverage, and an accidental death multiplier prior to age 85.
CoverMe® Easy Issue / Simplified Issue: Requires only a few basic health questions with no medical exams. Offers higher coverage maximums than guaranteed plans for applicants in reasonable health.
Fully Underwritten Permanent (Whole & Universal Life): Offers lifelong coverage with cash value accumulation, dividend options, and estate planning benefits. Typically available for issue ages up to 80.
Term Life Insurance (Term 10 / Term 20): Convertible to permanent coverage up to age 70 and renewable up to age 85–90. Ideal for temporary obligations like outstanding mortgages or estate taxes.

Coverage Focus Across Senior Age Categories

Ages 55–59 (Late Career & Asset Protection):
- Focus: Income replacement, mortgage payoff, and estate preservation.
- Strategy: Standard Term 10/20 policies or Whole Life plans are readily available with full medical underwriting to secure the lowest rates.
Ages 60–64 (Pre-Retirement & Conversion Rights):
- Focus: Transitioning from employer group benefits to individual coverage.
- Strategy: Consider converting existing Manulife term policies to permanent plans before age 70 without providing new evidence of insurability.
Ages 65–69 (Early Retirement & Final Expenses):
- Focus: Covering final expenses, probate fees, or leaving tax-free inheritances.
- Strategy: Utilize simplified-issue plans if minor health conditions exist, or enroll in Manulife Vitality Go™ to earn points and potential wellness rewards.
Ages 70–74 (Estate Tax & Debt Protection):
- Focus: Tax liabilities associated with registered accounts (RRSP/RRIF) or secondary properties upon death.
- Strategy: Lock in permanent guaranteed coverage up to $50,000–$100,000 before reaching the maximum entry age for guaranteed issue plans.
Ages 75–79 (Last Window for Guaranteed Issue):
- Focus: Final expense funding without medical underwriting.
- Strategy: Age 75 is the upper application limit for Manulife Guaranteed Issue Life. Policies issued prior to age 75 remain active for life as long as premiums are paid.
Ages 80–85+ (Legacy & Existing Policy Maintenance):
- Focus: Maintaining active permanent policies and managing benefit payouts.
- Strategy: Existing permanent and guaranteed policies remain in effect for life. On select CoverMe® permanent plans, premiums stop upon turning age 95 while full coverage continues.

Smart Tips for Senior Applicants in Canada

Understand the 2-Year Waiting Period: Guaranteed issue plans (no medical exam) feature a 2-year limitation where non-accidental death pays out a refund of premiums paid plus interest rather than the full face value.
Apply Before Age 75: Because Manulife's guaranteed acceptance plans cap eligibility at age 75, applications must be completed prior to your 76th birthday.
Lock In Rates Early: Life insurance premiums in Canada are calculated based on nearest age, biological sex, and smoking status. Applying before your next birthday locks in lower lifelong rate tiers.
