Vantage Mobility International, known as VMI, has been building wheelchair-accessible vehicle conversions since 1987 and is recognized within the industry for pioneering the powered in-floor ramp system that's now considered a standard across the category. According to Mobility Express, VMI's manufacturing facility operates under Six Sigma quality standards and holds a Toyota Gold Certificate for Quality, a distinction awarded to very few conversion manufacturers.

The Three Main Conversion Systems

VMI builds its conversions onto established minivan platforms, including the Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager, and Honda Odyssey, rather than manufacturing an entirely separate vehicle from scratch. The lineup centers on three core conversion systems, each aimed at a different type of user.

The Northstar conversion is VMI's flagship system, featuring a fully powered in-floor ramp that stows completely beneath the floor, keeping the doorway and interior clear of obstacles. It includes VMI's Access360 interior space, a PowerKneel lowering system that tilts the vehicle toward the curb for easier boarding, ParkSmart parking sensors, and interchangeable front seats, making it a strong fit for power wheelchair and larger scooter users.

The Northstar E, sometimes called the Apex depending on the dealer, uses a powered fold-out ramp instead of an in-floor system. It still delivers generous interior space and 2-inch safety side rails, offering VMI's build quality at a more accessible entry point for buyers who don't need the in-floor ramp specifically.

A third option, built for caregiver-assisted transport, positions the wheelchair user in the front passenger area rather than the rear cabin, combining a powered in-floor ramp with front-seat access for situations where an attendant is doing the driving.

Choosing Between Side-Entry and Rear-Entry

VMI conversions come in both side-entry and rear-entry configurations. According to The Mobility Resource, rear-entry ramps tend to run less and are more common for wheelchair users who will primarily ride as passengers, while side-entry conversions generally provide more flexibility for a wheelchair user who wants to drive from their chair. The right choice largely comes down to whether the user plans to drive independently or ride as a passenger, along with practical concerns like parking space and garage clearance.

Financial Assistance Options

Buying a wheelchair-accessible van is a significant investment, so several assistance paths exist beyond standard financing. According to Access Mobility Vans, veterans purchasing their first VMI van may qualify for an additional $1,000 reduction through the Operation Independence program, and USAA members may qualify for a separate $1,000 reduction as well. Wheelchair Dynamics also notes a Help Hope Live fundraiser contribution of $1,000 toward a new VMI conversion for people facing unmet medical expenses due to injury or illness, along with a complimentary first-year membership to Mobility Roadside Assistance included with a new purchase. Beyond manufacturer-specific assistance, state grants, veteran's assistance programs, and state vocational rehabilitation assistance are also commonly used to help fund a purchase.

FAQs

Which VMI conversion is best for a power wheelchair user?
The Northstar conversion, with its in-floor ramp and PowerKneel lowering system, is generally best suited to power wheelchairs and larger scooters.

Can a wheelchair user drive a VMI-converted van themselves?
Yes, side-entry conversions are generally built to support independent driving from a wheelchair, while rear-entry setups are more common for passenger use.

Are there financial assistance options specifically for veterans?
Yes, veterans purchasing their first VMI van may qualify for an additional reduction through the Operation Independence program, and USAA members may qualify for a separate reduction.

Does VMI convert used vehicles, or only new ones?
VMI builds both new and used conversions, and inventory varies by dealer, so checking with a local certified VMI dealer is the best way to confirm what's currently available.

Conclusion

Choosing a VMI wheelchair van comes down to matching the conversion system, whether that's the in-floor Northstar, the fold-out Northstar E, or a caregiver-focused front-seat setup, to how the vehicle will actually be used day to day. With financial assistance programs available through veteran-specific initiatives and broader funding resources like state grants, it's worth exploring every applicable option before finalizing a purchase through a certified VMI dealer.
